Gabriel puts his hand on my thigh and strokes it. I put my palms together and hide them between my knees. Even his touch, which I have craved for so long, cannot comfort me now. Taking my hand he puts it to his lips and kisses it while maneuvering the car through the cold, gray streets. He says nothing, but I know he feels my pain.
He doesnât let go of my hand, not even when we reach our building, pressing me against him as we go upstairs. My tears have dried but my heart continues to weep.
Sounds of laughter come from Marionâs apartment, and I feel that the universe is laughing at me. I shudder and frown with nausea.
âYouâre amazing,â Gabriel says the minute the door closes behind us, and his small smile tugs at my heart strings.
âI donât feel amazing right now.â My body clings to his and I put my head on his chest.
âYou must learn to accept this pain and allow yourself to celebrate your victories.â He caresses my head.
âThere isnât any victory here.â The tears return. âOnly losses. Theyâre still here and now it seems as if theyâll stay forever.â
âNo. They wonât.â He disengages from me and takes off his coat.
âDo you know something I donât?â Tiredly, I wipe my tears.
âMany things.â He winks at me.
Marie enters the drawing room and looks questioningly at us.
âHeâs in good hands.â Gabriel smiles at her and when she sighs, it seems to me that sheâs aged ten years at least.
âIâve made dinner for you and now, with your permission, Iâll return to my apartment.â She looks grief-stricken.
Gabriel helps her put her coat on and when she hugs me the current that passes between us makes my heart contract with pain. A fateful collaboration between two women who, until recently, were strangers, and who now share a terrible sadness.
âThe bath water is hot,â she says to Gabriel. âYou should freshen up after your long journey. And try and let Josephine rest, she didnât sleep all night.â
He nods and opens the door for her.
I find it hard to absorb that this man really is here. With me.
âIâll be quick.â He loosens his tie and turns into the passage. âI know youâre tired, but Iâll be glad if youâll join me for dinner tonight.â
âOf course.â I yawn and stare at his huge back.
âI hope youâre done with your adventures for today.â He stops and looks round at me. âIn about half an hour, the SS will raid some Resistance buildings.â
âWhat?!â I step back in alarm.
âThereâs nothing to be done now,â he says firmly. âYouâre lucky to be here and not wandering the streets.â
âButâ¦I must warn my friends.â I look at the telephone and then at him.
âJosephine, itâs out of the question.â He opens his eyes warningly and walks on down the passage.
Thoughts whirl through my mind and I start walking about the drawing room in confusion. I look at the clock and then at the door and again at the clock. I hear the water in the bathroom and shake my head.
